Villa with organic forms, Vâlcea — 3D scanning and volume calculation for settlement

A 1,000 m² luxury villa with curved walls and surfaces that are neither flat nor vertical. A tape cannot do it; a total station takes weeks. Three days on site, volume calculation by element in 7 days.

In short

  • Building: luxury villa with organic forms, 1,000 m², Vâlcea County
  • Equipment: Riegl VZ-400i + Trimble TX8
  • On site: 3 days
  • Deliverables: volume and area calculation by element, 3D model
  • Timeframe: 7 days from scanning
  • Purpose: settlement of works between client and contractor

The situation

The contractor and the client had to settle works on real areas and volumes. On a geometry like this, any conventional method produces figures one of the parties disputes. A measurement both would accept was needed.

What we did

Three days on site, with a Riegl VZ-400i and a Trimble TX8 combined: the complexity of the forms required more stations than an ordinary building of the same floor area. From the point cloud we extracted the areas and volumes for each element and delivered the 3D model. Timeframe: 7 days from scanning.

What it is used for

The settlement figures come from measured geometry, not estimates. When both parties have the same source, the discussion moves from “how much is there” to “how much it costs”. The same method works for any settlement on existing work: ventilated façades, render, screeds, irregular structures.

What the client and contractor received

A single source of truth for settlement, accepted by both parties.

01

Area calculation

The real areas of each element, including curved walls and non-vertical surfaces.

02

Volume calculation

Volumes by element, extracted from the measured geometry, not from estimates.

03

3D model

The model of the real geometry, delivered 7 days after scanning.

Frequently asked questions

How do you measure a building with curved walls for contract settlement?

With 3D laser scanning: the point cloud records the real geometry, and areas and volumes are extracted element by element, including forms that are neither flat nor vertical.

How long did the project take?

Three days on site with a Riegl VZ-400i and a Trimble TX8; the volume calculation and 3D model were delivered within 7 days of scanning.

Why were two scanners needed?

The complexity of the forms required more scan stations than an ordinary building of the same floor area.

What other work can the same method be used for?

For any settlement on existing work: ventilated façades, render, screeds, irregular structures.

Need to settle works on a complicated geometry?

Send us a few photos, the location and the approximate floor area. Within 24 working hours we tell you how we would document it, what we deliver and what it costs. Indicative ranges on the pricing page.
